Geography

Comoros is an archipelago on the southeastern coast of Africa. It is situated east of Mozambique and northwest of Madagascar.

There are four major islands in the Comoros archipelago: Grande Comore (N’gazidja), Moheli (Mwali), Anjouan (Ndzuwani), and Mayotte (Mahore). Grande Comore is the largest island, whereas Moheli is the smallest.

It is believed that the islands emerged from the Indian Ocean’s floor due to volcanic activity.

Climate

Comoros islands have a tropical climate and thus have two seasons, cool and dry season and humid season.

The cool and dry season in the islands starts from May and lasts till October, whereas the warm and humid season occurs between November and April.

November also gets the summer monsoon rains. January faces the highest rainfall in the country that ranges about 275-375 mm.

The best time to visit the Comoro islands is from April to November as the weather is dry, making it great for exploring the islands and enjoying the water activities.

Nature and Wildlife

The islands of Comoros are undoubtedly beautiful; however, only one-sixth of its lands are covered with forests due to deforestation for domestic firewood.

The coastal zones of the islands constitute coconut palms, mangroves, and banana trees. In addition, mahogany trees and orchids are found on the rugged slopes of the mountains.

You will also find aromatic plants like jasmine, lemongrass, and frangipani.

In terms of animals, it is the same as Madagascar. It houses land birds like guinea fowl and egrets. You will also find lemurs and fruit bats on the islands.

Besides, you will also find a rare fish called coelacanth on the island’s waters.

People

Comoros islands have a diverse ethnic composition.

People from Madagascar have mixed with the immigrants of Malaysia and traders of Arabian and Persian countries.

Besides, these inhabitants speak varieties of Comorian languages. They speak Bantu language that is written in Arabic script and are related to Swahili.

However, Comorian, French, and Arabic are the official languages of Comoros.
